Monthly Malware Statistics, September 2010

Kaspersky Lab presents its malware rankings for September.
There are relatively few new malicious programs in either ranking. It is, however, worth highlighting a new ‘bundle’: Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Sality.cx which installs Virus.Win32.Sality.bh to an infected computer. The dropper spreads using a vulnerability in WinLNK files (i.e., Windows shortcuts). It's also worth noting that in September the number of exploits targeting CVE-2010-1885 (the Windows Help and Support Center vulnerability) was significantly lower than in August. Another September trait is that the number of exploits – 7 - in the Top 20 was equal to that of adware programs.

The malicious program intercepts the user’s requests to various sites and redirects them to a malicious URL. It also contains a tool for sending phishing messages. It propagates via e-mail and peer-to-peer networks. It is a Windows PE EXE file. The file is ~300 KB in size. It is written in C++.

Tired of waiting for Seiko to produce an E Ink watch that mere mortals can touch, much less afford? A little company by the name of Art Technology has been delivering mass-market wearables using the technology since 2007 -- and its latest model dials up the functionality factor just a smidge by adding support for twenty-four time zones, two of which can be displayed simultaneously. Granted, it's using a segmented display, not dot matrix -- which means it bears a closer resemblance to that Timex you owned in the late '80s than Seiko's wild active matrix model -- but again, like we said, this one's actually quite affordable and it's available right this second.
